New acquisition, donation

The museum has received a donation of an oil painting from Johannes Larsen's series illustrating The Ugly Duckling by Hans Christian Andersen. Thanks to this generous gesture, we now can add this painting to our collection. The giver does not wish his or her name to be announced publicly.

In 1930, the celebration of Hans Christian Andersen's 125th birthday, Johannes Larsen created 34 oil paintings with motifs taken from the tale of the ugly duckling. They were hung at Funen's Village Hall in Odense, but in 1942, the series was split up, as the paintings were sold at auction to many different buyers. Including the new acquisition, the museum now owns two of them.

In 1945-47, Johannes Larsen again worked on The Ugly Duckling, painting 35 watercolours on the theme of the children's story. These paintings hung for about 40 years at the seaside restaurant, Pax, in Kerteminde, after which time the owners decided to donate them to the Johannes Larsen Museum. This series of watercolours can be seen in the museum's children's room, "The Fairy Tale Room", and has also been used to illustrate our picture book of Hans Christian Andersen's story.

Our art search was broadcast far and wide with the help of the press, Facebook and by word of mouth. After just a short time, to our great pleasure, we received many responses from people who own artwork by Christine Swane.
